Athens - sunlight on a broken column

Not that my painting and the title line, from T.S. Eliot's The Hollow Men, were meant to have a lot in common other than in the literal sense...  I'm not much of a poetry reader, but this is one of my all-time favorite poems (along with Eliot's The Waste Land and The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock).

Bronte country (two versions)

I was looking around via Google maps at the countryside around Haworth, where the Bronte sisters lived, and found this view to paint.  I know this is not a unique experience, but I remember discovering Jane Eyre in high school and feeling like it was a literary epiphany.  It so nicely resonated with my teen angst.  I subsequently began devouring all of the novels by the Bronte sisters (as well as other 19th century British women writers).  As I mentioned previously in a post, I did something of a pilgrimage to Haworth back in 1999.

two paintings added to Vivace showing

As a couple of my paintings at Vivace have been sold, I hung up replacements this afternoon.  Sale for both of these is pending (happened during the trade-off) Update - 21 March 2011: both are now sold.

This first one is of the Luxembourg countryside.  I painted larger versions of this view back in October 2009 (posted January 2010).

the newer paintings on show at Vivace

Here's an inventory of paintings showing at Vivace I haven't posted on this blog yet.

This first one is of a beach on Kaua'i, from our 2007 visit.

This next one is a smaller version of a painting I'd done earlier, of a view near Red Beach on the Greek island of Santorini.  I went for easier-to-frame 8"x10" size.

Here it is at Vivace.

This next one is also a second - much smaller - version of one I painted back in June 2010 (posted in July), of a service road leading up to the Portland International Rose Test Garden.

Like the previous two, this last one is also a reworking, painted on a more standard 11" x 14" size.  The previous versions were painted over a year ago, 18 January 2010 (posted in February 2010) and 5 October 2009 (posted January 2010).  It's interesting in a self-absorbed sort of way to see how my painting style has gradually changed over the year...

The painting I posted yesterday is of the Sosogi Coast on the Noto Peninsula in Japan, from my visit there long ago during my student days.

my artwork at Vivace

I'm very excited to announce that some of my recent paintings are now showing at Vivace here in Portland!  They'll be there until the first week of April (2 April 2011 update - show extended to end of May). I just hung them up this afternoon.  Vivace is a wonderfully atmospheric coffee house and creperie, located in a Victorian house in the Nob Hill neighborhood (on the corner of  NW 23rd and NW Pettygrove).  They serve truly yummy crepes and a fine cuppa coffee.

I'm showing both paintings I've already posted on this blog as well as some other ones, like this one below.   I'm posting all of them on a separate "page", "Travel Log" at Vivace.
